At university I majored in accounting, finance and economics, and did an internship with a major firm of accountants. This helped me decide to aim for an accounting career in commerce, and I joined Deutsche Bank as an analyst in the graduate training program. The induction program provided an excellent introduction to the Bank, with discussions on its history and culture from senior managers, and the chance to meet and network with fellow graduates from around the world.
The graduate training program involved two years’ rotational training, and this allowed me to experience different divisions and grow into a role that suited me. To begin with, I worked in Finance, helping to look after the credit trading desk in Sydney. I learned about how markets operate and the various products and instruments that are traded within these markets.
During the program, I was encouraged to learn and improve my knowledge through the Bank’s many learning resources, and I also was able to visit London. This was a fantastic experience for me, as it’s one of the world’s most important financial centers, and also a great city to explore and have fun in! I built up a great network of friends among the other graduates, and I’m still in touch with many of them today.
The Bank has also supported me in many other ways. At the moment I’m working towards my Chartered Accounting qualification, and they’re funding my studies. They’re also very dedicated to helping everyone maintain a healthy work/life balance, which I think is essential to a successful career.
