Deutsche Bank’s role as the first ever Education Partner of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) focuses on supporting the museum’s wide range of innovative learning initiatives for young people.
Housed within a modified 1960s caravan, Good Vibrations is a multi-sensory art access project designed to engage young people with a hands-on art experience. It uses vibrations, light, colour and sound in a series of creative sound workshops.
From its temporary home at the Rosemeadow Community Centre in Western Sydney, Good Vibrations hosted over 60 Open Family clients of different ages and from different backgrounds who worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) educators to learn about sound and sound recording. Each workshop was tailored to the specific needs and learning level of the group with an emphasis on the collaborative and creative process of finding sounds to experiment with and record.
The workshops began with a discussion about the senses and the Open Family clients were shown around Good Vibrations to see how the caravan functioned as a brain with its own eyes, ears and memory. They were encouraged to discover the entire caravan’s capabilities – both inside and out – and then ventured into the surrounding environment where they found sounds to record and photograph. The young people participated in practical art making activities while the MCA educators edited the material in the caravan. The workshop then ended with the young people playing back and remixing the material they had collected and recorded.
Feedback from the Open Family clients indicates that the interactive experience was an overwhelming success. Twelve year old Graham said it was “amazing” while another client described the caravan as “the best”.
Deutsche Bank has a long-standing relationship with the MCA and for the past seven years has been the major partner of its Primavera exhibition. In its expanded capacity, Deutsche Bank is also making existing education opportunities at the MCA available to the local community charities it supports – such as taking Good Vibrations to Open Family.
John Macfarlane, Executive Chairman, Deutsche Bank Australia and New Zealand, said, “Art, education and social investment are three cornerstones of Deutsche Bank’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and we are thrilled that our expanded relationship with the MCA captures all three. This partnership – and it truly is a partnership – has been seven years in the making and comes at a very exciting time in the MCA’s history. Combining art with education is the MCA’s core strength and its vibrant and intelligent education programs open up a new and highly imaginative visual world. We are especially pleased that in addition to supporting the MCA’s existing programs, our new partnership will enable the MCA to undertake projects with the other charities Deutsche Bank supports.”
Deutsche Bank’s new role reflects the importance of education which is at the very heart of the MCA’s future as it undergoes an AUD 53m redevelopment to include new state-of-the-art education facilities.
