Deutsche Bank and Dr. Josef Ackermann honoured by Euromoney
July 8, 2009

Lifetime Achievement Award is among 16 presented to Deutsche Bank at the 2009 Euromoney Awards for Excellence

Deutsche Bank shone at the 2009 Euromoney Awards for Excellence in a special ceremony.

Among the highlights was Deutsche Bank being named “Best Global Risk Management House”, as well as the presentation of the “Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Financial Markets” to Dr. Josef Ackermann, Chairman of the Management Board. The award, presented for the first time, also commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Euromoney Awards for Excellence.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognised Dr. Josef Ackermann’s outstanding career in financial services, and in particular the exceptional leadership that he provided to the financial sector during the economic crisis.

“Dr. Josef Ackermann has established himself as one of the leading bank chief executives of his generation through his stewardship of Deutsche Bank over the past seven years,” Euromoney said in a press statement. “In addition, he has been a thoughtful and powerful spokesman on behalf of the banking industry as a whole as chairman of the Institute of International Finance. At a time when finance faced its greatest crisis, and desperately needed leadership, Dr. Josef Ackermann provided it.”

In accepting the honour at the awards ceremony, Dr. Josef Ackermann said: “I am delighted to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award – but also humbled, because I still see a great deal which I feel very committed to achieving. And it’s hard to think of a time, in recent years, when the stakes have been as high as they are now.”

Dr. Josef Ackermann also used his speech as an opportunity to urge the financial industry to “adapt to the lessons learned form the financial crisis”. He called for peers to: engage in dialogue with regulators, politicians and central banks; speak with a coherent and consistent voice; be honest about the mistakes that were made; and win back public confidence and trust.

As well as the Lifetime Achievement Award, the presentation of “Best Global Risk Management House Award” to Deutsche Bank was particularly significant in 2009, given the Bank’s ability to emerge as a relative winner in navigating the financial crisis.

In addition to the two key awards, Deutsche Bank received a number of regional awards. A full list can be found below.
