Education - Enabling talent

Providing our youth with a solid education is paramount in securing their ability to thrive in the future. It is essential that the generation who will eventually be responsible for maintaining the integrity of our communities be properly equipped for this enormous task, and that the means of preparedness are available to all students, regardless of background. Deutsche Bank recognizes the importance of promoting opportunities for quality education among under-served populations. By partnering with the city of New York, private foundations, and local non-profits, the Bank seeks to revitalize low-income communities by creating programs that can close the achievement gap and provide all students with the resources needed to achieve their maximum potential.

Teachers as Leaders

Launched in January 2008, Teachers as Leaders was created by Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation in partnership with the City University of New York Black Male Initiative and the Schott Foundation for Public Education to increase the number of Black males serving as New York City public school teachers. Teachers as Leaders operates on 10 CUNY campuses with 46 scholars currently participating in the initiative. Scholars are expected to graduate and become teachers in New York City public schools in 2009 and fall 2010.

College Ready Communities

Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation received a $2 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to leverage the foundation’s current investments in low-to-moderate income communities in New York City. Building off of Deutsche Bank’s decades-long investment in Community Development Corporations (CDCs) and public education in New York City, Deutsche Bank has created College Ready Communities. Through College Ready Communities, the Bank will facilitate partnerships between CDCs, education advocacy/organizing organizations, and public middle and high schools. These partnerships will strengthen connections between communities, schools, and the New York City Department of Education, and improve student academic outcomes.

Immigrant Students and English Language Learners

Over the past three years, the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation has supported nonprofit organizations that deliver services to improve student learning and raise academic performance for English Language Learners and recent immigrant students. The foundation has also promoted opportunities for these organizations to form a network around a shared vision for immigrant education. Deutsche Bank partnered with the George Washington University Center for Equity and Excellence in Education to evaluate the effectiveness of the network in sustaining innovative strategies. George Washington University’s preliminary findings have demonstrated that the most promising practices for students are those that address needs holistically. The report will be used to direct Deutsche Bank’s future investments and is available here.
