‘5,000 Popcorns’ returns to add festive cheer to 5,000 children in 5 cities

November 2013 │ India

After the success of last year, ‘5,000 Popcorns’ returned to kick start the festive cheer for almost 5,000 children from 36 non-government organisations (NGOs), who were invited to watch the heart-warming movie ‘Stanley ka Dabba’ at simultaneous movie screenings in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune and Bangalore.

Cinema halls are normally a picture of calm in the early morning, as the throngs of visitors are yet to line up for the latest blockbuster. The morning of November 26 was different, as the second edition of '5,000 Popcorns' got underway at PVR Cinemas, the programme partner.

A Deutsche Bank initiative for children from underprivileged backgrounds to experience the magic of movies in a multiplex, 5,000 Popcorns is designed to give the children much needed exposure to positive messages and role models, as they grow up in challenging environments.

The movie selected this year was ‘Stanley Ka Dabba’, a heart-warming tale that celebrates the spirit of resourcefulness in adversity. The children watched in awe as the main protagonist Stanley, deftly overcomes obstacles in life to pursue his dreams. Amole Gupte, the director of the movie, joined the event in Mumbai and mingled with the children amidst cheers and applause. After the screening, Gupte exhorted the children to stay focused, study well and refrain from substance abuse, a common problem in many slum communities. The children listened in rapt attention and in loud chorus, promised to follow his advice.

During the event, over 50 Deutsche Bank volunteers in five cities ensured that the children were well looked after. For many children, this was their first experience of a modern multiplex theatre and they were thrilled to watch a movie along with soft drinks, snacks and of course popcorn.

Speaking about the initiative, Shrinath Bolloju, Group Chief Operating Officer, Deutsche Bank India, said “After the stirring and warm response we got from the children last year, we are pleased to once again bring in the Christmas and New Year cheer to the children through the magic of cinema, even while sharing a beautiful and inspiring social message. We are delighted with the enthusiastic response we have received from the NGOs."
