Born to Be -- Second year of Young Friends sponsorship benefits another 300 underprivileged students in Hong Kong

May 2015 │ Hong Kong

Young Friends, an education and audience development programme designed to nurture local secondary and tertiary students’ interest in the performing arts in Hong Kong, began in 1992 and now has more than 130,000 student members. Deutsche Bank became the project’s first Corporate Sponsor in 2014.

Between 2014 and 2015, with Deutsche Bank’s support, close to 300 less-privileged students from eight secondary schools became Young Friends members. Arts are largely inaccessible to these students, who generally have to content with many problems. The membership opens the door to Arts and nurtured the students’ interest, by allowing them to attend two 2015 Hong Kong Arts Festival programmes, and two arts activities or events, such as workshops, backstage tours or masterclasses. In addition, each student can enjoy a transportation subsidy of up to HKD 200 for participating in a total of four Young Friends activities.

The main objective of Young Friends is to offer quality, year-round arts experience to its members. In 2014/15, as members, Young Friends members have the opportunity to attend two selected Hong Kong Arts Festival performance(s), rehearsal(s) or Young Friends Special(s). In addition, they can also participate in Festival PLUS activities, Summer Events/Workshops, and the Young Friends Volunteer, Internship and Reporter schemes. These activities have been enthusiastically received by teachers and students who get to experience the performing arts from different perspectives.
