Cooking for a Cause with OzHarvest

July 2016 │ Australia

In June, eight employees from the Deutsche Bank Operations and Sales team in Sydney, Australia cooked up a storm to deliver goodness to people in need. Taking part in a Cooking for a Cause event at OzHarvest, a food rescue charity, the budding chefs used rescued ingredients from Woolworths Online to prepare fish pies and fatayers, a Middle Eastern meat pie. The fresh fatayer dough was prepared from scratch by the team. The result was over 300 delicious and nutritious meals that were delivered the same day to the Fact Tree and Rough Edges in Darlinghurst.

In Australia, four million tonnes of food each year ends up in landfill, yet two million people still rely on food relief every year and food relief agencies are not able to meet the demand. Founded in November 2004, OzHarvest is the first perishable food rescue organization in Australia collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it, direct and free of charge, to 600 charities providing much needed assistance to the needy across the country.

A Deutsche Bank volunteer commented that he had a great time volunteering with OzHarvest, “It is something that I would certainly do again. They do a wonderful job as a charitable organization, given the limited resources they have.”
