Volunteers come together in Kolkata to support two charities

Deutsche Bank employees from Singapore and various locations in India came together in Kolkata in November to volunteer with two charities. They first visited Rebecca Belilios English Institution, a school run by Samaritan Help Mission (SMH) which seeks to provide education and developmental opportunities to the poor and needy children living in slums, particularly young girls. The volunteers refurbished the school, brightening up the children’s hall with colourful murals and cleaning up the school’s outdoor areas. They also conducted a career counseling session with the students and ended the two-day visit with a friendly soccer match with the students.

The volunteers then visited a residential school run by Parivaar Education Society, which provides development opportunities to children who are highly vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking, including street children, orphans and extremely impoverished children from tribal areas. Parivaar is one of Deutsche Bank Singapore’s Donate One Day charities last year, and the funds raised went to the construction of a much-needed additional residential block for female students. The volunteers were glad to see the residential block completed. The volunteers helped to brighten up the campus with murals and also engaged with the students.

As part of a new ambassador exchange programme between the institutions, Deutsche Bank volunteers brought six students from SMH to the Parivaar campus on an educational field trip.  One of the students remarked, “today is the best day of my life.” The volunteers also conducted career guidance sessions with students from both institutions. They were heartened to hear of the students’ aspirations and hope that through their interactions and with their advice, the students gain more confidence.
