Rice dumplings for a good cause in Hong Kong

June 2017 │ Hong Kong

Supporting entrepreneurial ventures that create wider social good is a natural extension of what Deutsche Bank does for businesses of every size and purpose, every day, all over the world. In Hong Kong, Deutsche Bank works with Bright Services, a social enterprise enabling young ex-offenders to reintegrate into the society through a variety of training and work opportunities.

The bank provided funding to expand Bright Services’ central kitchen and start production of lo mai gai, a classic dim sum dish served during tea time. With the lead up to the Dragon Boat Festival in May, Deutsche Bank invited Bright Services to our Hong Kong office to set up a tasting booth for rice dumplings and lo mai gai.

The two-day tasting booth allowed staff to taste rice dumplings and lo mai gai that Bright Services produces, with the opportunity to pre-order rice dumplings for the Festival. The tasting booth was well-received, with more than 500 rice dumplings pre-orders received. Many employees left positive feedback about the quality and affordability of the rice dumplings, as well as the innovative use of healthier ingredients such as multi-grain rice and purple potato as substitutes. Every purchase of a rice dumpling represents support for ex-offenders re-integration.

Bright Services is ecstatic on their first corporate sales with the tasting booth. This new avenue allows them to pilot-test their new products. Looking ahead, they will set up a new business line to build on corporate tie ups.

Our collaboration with Bright Services as part of Made for Good continues this month, with a rice dumpling workshop for another bank-supported charity partner, Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children.
