Staff in Asia shave their heads in support of childhood cancer research

June 2017 │ Hong Kong, India, Singapore

For anyone whose child has been diagnosed with cancer, charities like Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) and CanKids become a pillar to lean on during this difficult time. Their aim is to provide support to children and families at different stages of childhood cancer.

Deutsche Bank has been supporting this cause for five years by hosting Hair for Hope / Shave for a Cure, a head-shaving event held simultaneously in Singapore, Hong Kong and Mumbai. The first event was held in 2013 in the Singapore office. Since then, Hair for Hope has expanded to Hong Kong and Mumbai. Participants shave their heads in a symbolic gesture to raise awareness and funds and to show support to children who have lost their hair through treatment.

Deutsche Bank employees, friends and family members – among them also a female employee – in Singapore, Hong Kong and Mumbai all shaved their heads at the same time raising close to 118,000 euros for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, CCF and CanKids.

Amy Tong, co-organiser of the event and moderator heard many moving stories: “In my interviews with the shavees, most of them either have personal experience with their loved ones and are doing this as a tribute, or found the courage to do it knowing how much children with cancer suffer. Many people have been a shavee before, but there were newcomers as well.”

A very good example of an employee with a personal reason behind his decision to become a shavee is Akash Mohapatra, Managing Director and Associate General Counsel, Asia, who spearheaded the initiative back in 2013 and is also the co-organiser of the event: “It is a privilege to shave for CCF as part of the Deutsche Team. I can see the difference it makes to the kids, and the work that CCF does – we saw how Sheam (cancer survivor from CCF) shared his story – cancer at age of 3 and now he is doing cancer research to kill cancer cells using UV lights on rats.” Mohapatra, who has been helping to organise the event for the past five years, lost an uncle to cancer the same day.

A total of more than 400,000 euros has been raised since 2013. “The commitment demonstrated by those who shaved and volunteers who donated was remarkable,” said Hong Kong Chief Operating Officer, Donna Chang.
