A family mission – feeding the elderly in Hong Kong

January 2016 │ Hong Kong

For the fourth year running, Deutsche Bank Hong Kong partnered with Food for Life to cook and distribute food for the elderly. Working with the world's largest vegetarian food relief network, 27 Deutsche Bank volunteers and their family and friends prepared and delivered wholesome vegetarian food to more than 1,000 underprivileged elderly folks in Hong Kong.

It was a cold morning on Sunday, January 31, when the volunteers met to cook and prepare the food from scratch. They started by washing and chopping, then cooking and packing. Finally they delivered more than 1000 hot meals to 1,050 underprivileged elderly in seven locations of Hong Kong: Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin, Ho Man Tin, Yau Ma Tei, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po.

As the volunteer event was open to friends and family, many volunteers brought their children, with the youngest volunteer just four years old! Despite their age, the children were an integral part of the group, helping to prepare lunch boxes, pack the food and distribute the meals. In the process, they helped usher in a special start to the Chinese New Year for the beneficiaries and their family members. Everyone gained satisfaction from the work, and it was heartening for them to hear one of the elderly folk enthusiastically say, “This is the best food”.
