COVID-19 CSR Response

April 2020 │ Asia Pacific

As part of Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility In the Community focus, the bank and colleagues across Asia Pacific are uniting with communities to help fight the spread of COVID-19.

In India, we are providing much-needed support to over 50,000 people impacted by the pandemic, through three individual initiatives that focus on providing food, isolation shelter and basic supplies. Working with Akshaya Patra, we are giving out one million free meals to the homeless and daily wage labourers in the cities of Jaipur, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Surat. We are also distributing 16,000 essential kits in urban slums of Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Bangalore, Delhi as well as in remote villages of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan, and to tribal families in Maharashtra, all impacted due to loss of livelihoods. This is done in partnership with Smile Foundation, Goonj and Swades Foundation. These kits include rice, flour, spices, basic toiletries and other essentials. Additionally, we have partnered with Apollo Foundation to support 450 free isolation rooms in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi for economically disadvantaged patients of the Coronavirus, who do not need acute medical attention but only basic medicines and care, until they recover. In addition, as there is an acute need for ventilators across government and semi-private hospitals, we have also partnered with Swades Foundation to sponsor eight ventilators for hospitals in Mumbai.

Hong Kong employees are helping to feed the homeless by distributing bento box meals prepared by long-term charity partner, Dignity Kitchen. Dignity Kitchen is a social enterprise in both Hong Kong and Singapore that trains and employs people with disabilities. The meals are given to ImpactHK, an organisation supporting homeless people for whom charitable organisations can be a lifeline. Deutsche Bank also donated and distributed 6,000 protective face masks to low-income families and vulnerable community members in Hong Kong.

We also worked with Dignity Kitchen in Singapore to provide 800 hot meals to frontline workers. Staff also prepared hand-made thank you cards to go along with the bento boxes. We are also donating and distributing 300 kilograms of peanuts to 1,400 migrant workers currently isolated in their dormitories due to an outbreak.

In Sri Lanka, we are partnering with John Keells Foundation, the CSR arm of one of our clients, to establish a molecular virology laboratory for the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Colombo, to enable efficient testing and to combat COVID-19.

The bank in China also pledged RMB 1 million (EUR 130,000) to the China Charity Federation. This donation is being used to distribute protective and surgical masks, disposable protective clothing and medical goggles to medical staff and volunteers and to fund prevention and control programmes in the Hubei Province and other affected cities in China.

Employees bank-wide are also joining in our effort to lend a helping hand during these unprecedented times. The bank will match their donations, doubling the overall impact. We are supporting food & shelter charities in our communities with fast and direct aid for the homeless, street children, low-income families, and vulnerable elderly people, amongst others. In Asia Pacific, we are working with one community partner from each of our markets to ensure local needs are met swiftly.
