Deutsche Bank volunteers build 10th school with My School Project

March 2016 │ Thailand

In early March, nearly 70 employees from nine countries across Asia traveled to Prachinburi Province in central Thailand with one common goal in mind – to refurbish a school for children in the province which is more than three hours drive from Bangkok.

This is the ninth year Deutsche Bank Bangkok is partnering the non-profit called My School, which mobilises funds to build and renovate school buildings in remote villages. This also marks the tenth school Deutsche Bank volunteers have helped rebuild.

On March 3, 18 regional volunteers flew into Bangkok and joined a group of 23 local volunteers from the Bangkok office. They traveled three hours via coach to Prachinburi Province, about 200 kilometres away. The following morning, the volunteers joined students for morning exercises. When the students left for their classes, the volunteers went straight to work.

The school serves 90 kindergarten and primary school students who were cramped into one classroom block. The volunteers’ mission was to complete the construction of a new classroom building with two classrooms for the older students, providing a more spacious and comfortable learning environment for all the students in the school. The group worked side by side to erect the walls of the building, using hand drills and hammers. The volunteers worked together and soon found their rhythm, despite the heat. By noon, the walls were all in place. The group then started painting both the exterior and interiors of the building.

On Saturday, another group of 30 employees from the Bangkok office joined in the volunteering work. A few Deutsche Bank volunteers began the morning teaching students a Body Combat Clinic which is martial arts to music. The children and some of the volunteers participated with glee.

Afterwards, the two groups of volunteers then came together and split into smaller teams. One group completed the paint work, while another refurbished the library building with a new coat of paint and new books and bookcases. Another group flexed their creativity and painted murals for the students, and the remaining volunteers fixed up the playground.

The construction work was completed right on schedule and a brief handover ceremony was also held. The students and teachers were excited to see their new learning space, and the volunteers themselves were even happier to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they explored their new classrooms.

As one volunteer put it, “It makes Deutsche Bank a better place if we all participate together, not just at work, but also in community projects like this.”
