East Coast Flood Relief with Food Aid Foundation

December 2015 │ Malaysia

In past years, the monsoon months of December and January have seen the East Coast of Malaysia hit by floods, displacing thousands of people from their homes. In December 2015, to prepare for the floods, the Food Aid Foundation started food packs preparation and storage to enable easy distribution to flood-hit areas.

In support of the initiative, Deutsche Bank Corporate Volunteers and their family members, led by Deutsche Bank Malaysia’s Head of Islamic Banking Malaysia, Zulfikar-Hashman Jamalkhir, joined Food Aid Foundation in their East Coast Flood Relief effort on December 5.

The volunteers spent their Saturday helping to pack ready-to-eat food items into individual bags and subsequently, into boxes for distribution to the flood victims through the East Coast Flood Relief Operations Centre in Kelantan. The food packs contained food items such as biscuits and ready to eat rice.

The packing process required hard work from the volunteers, with one saying, “I felt like (I was) working in the factory’s production line and it is not as easy as it looks. It was a lot of hard work.” To make the process of packing food fun, the volunteers formed two identical productions queues, pitting each queue against the other in terms of speed and packaging quality. In five hours, close to 2,800 packs of ready-to-eat food were completed, amid lots of fun, and laughter among the volunteers.

Food Aid Foundation’s Founder, Rick Chee, thanked the Bank for the efforts, saying, “We would like to personally thank you for your recent contribution of time for packing more than 2,700 packets of Ready-to-Eat-Eat food pack for the East Coast Flood Relief programme. This event would not have been a success without your team’s involvement. We would like to say a heartfelt “Thank You!””

Food Aid Foundation is a charity ‘Food Bank’ where companies in the supply chains and people from all walks of life donate food items or produce, giving food a new lease of life by channelling it to charitable homes, volunteer welfare organisations, refugees community, poor families, the destitute and soup kitchens. As part of Deutsche Bank’s In the Community programme, our volunteers provide hands-on support to the charity in terms of packing and distributing food.
