Learning English through rugby

May 2017 │ Hong Kong

In the last couple of months, Deutsche Bank Hong Kong employees committed their Fridays to help secondary school students improve their English skills while playing rugby. This is part of our support for the Tackling English programme, which is run jointly by the Hong Kong Rugby Union, Po Leung Kuk and the British Council. The unique initiative, under our Born to Be programme, helps secondary school students learn English through playing rugby and develop confidence in using the language.

Deutsche Bank Wealth Management supported two schools through the programme, which consisted of one 90-minute session per week, for four weeks. Each session was attended by up to 60 students and Deutsche Bank volunteers got involved as well, playing rugby with the students while interacting with them in English.

In total, 34 volunteers participated in the two-month programme, helping 70 students from 2 schools improve their English and learn about the core values of rugby: respect, teamwork and discipline.
