Two-month spoken English course for children at Sujaya Foundation

August 2015 │ India

In association with Sujaya Foundation, a non-profit which gives underprivileged children and youth an opportunity platform to launch them into the dignified and bright future they deserve through education, Deutsche Bank Corporate Responsibility (CR) champions organised a two-month long spoken English course for children at the Foundation.

Every week, the CR champions engaged with volunteers for their participation in the next class. One of the champions said, "Most volunteers were willing to come on multiple weekends. It is rare not to have any volunteer participation. Deutsche Bank volunteers have never let us down during the eight weeks we conducted the classes."

The course material and the course itself were well structured and the volunteers covered basic English grammar -- tenses, sentence formation and limited public speaking -- while encouraging the students to learn and come out of their shells. One of the champions said, "Having the same volunteers come again to the class helps tremendously, because it helps create a bond between the teacher and the student, helping the student make the most of the interaction."

As per tradition, a test was conducted at the end of the two months’ programme, followed by a small party. All students passed the test with flying colours. One of the volunteers said, "The students were all bright eyed and eager to learn from day one. We really enjoyed our teaching experience and by the end of the programme, we were really happy with how much the children had learned."

The volunteering activity is a win-win partnership for both Deutsche Bank volunteers and children and Sujaya.
