‘Hand-in-Hand’ with the handicapped

July 2012 │ China

On April 14, Deutsche Bank Group Technology and Operations (GTO) in China held their first ‘Hand-in-Hand’ activity for the year. In 2011, our GTO colleagues organized ‘Hand-in-Hand’ visits to nine families with family members who are severely handicapped. This year, they decided to take the families out for the day.

Four volunteers from Deutsche Bank, together with volunteers from Zhiliao Charity Organization, accompanied two families to The People's Park to enjoy the fresh spring air. Both of these families have young daughters confined to wheelchairs. The volunteers and the families spent the day in the park and had a lovely picnic lunch under a cherry blossom tree. The families had a wonderful time and at the end of the day, the volunteers exchanged numbers with them to stay in touch.

On June 9, another seven volunteers from Deutsche Bank Shanghai participated in the second "Hand-in-Hand" activity this year.

The volunteers took two families with wheelchair-bound children out to Zhongshan Park, one of the biggest parks in Shanghai. Although the weather was scorching hot, everyone was in a great mood. The volunteers spent the day exploring the park with the families, finishing the day with a picnic in the pavilion. The volunteers were particularly touched by a girl’s simple wish to visit the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, something which could be easily realized for any one of us, but difficult for her. After the outing, the volunteers received a touching letter from one of the girls, thanking them for the wonderful memories

From these activities, the volunteers have a much deeper understanding of how the handicapped live, “and by participating in such activities, we have realized there are far more people in the world that need care and love. We genuinely wish more people could join us. Let's work together to make their lives better!”
