After a brief round of introductions at SLEC’s Whampoa Centre facility, our volunteers joined the elderly folk on the Deutsche Bank Art Bus for the ride to Gardens by the Bay. An eye-catching kaleidoscope of floral colors awaited the group at the Gardens’ Flower Dome where the volunteers played the role of guides and toured the area with the elderly.
The tour provided excellent opportunities for interaction between the young and old. While some engaged in photography, others took a moment to appreciate nature’s offerings. The elderly with their wealth of experience, shared their life stories with the volunteers during their strolls. By the end of the tour, the group had built up healthy appetites and proceeded to lunch on traditional hawker fare favorites like Hokkien noodles and nasi lemak at Hillstreet Café. After lunch, the group visited the Cloud Dome with its breathtaking waterfall as the main attraction.
To round off the outing, each of the elderly folks received a goodie bag from the Deutsche volunteers who were warmly thanked with songs, karaoke and applause – putting huge smiles on the faces of all. Lay-Ling Ng, a caregiver at St Luke's Eldercare, said: "With heartfelt gratitude, we thank all of you for making it possible for us to visit Gardens by the Bay. We feel extremely privileged to be part of this outing."
