In the Philippines, Deutsche Bank continues to commit resources in green programmes that promote environmental sustainability, education projects for underprivileged youths, and initiatives that ensure the further development of the local art and music scene. Corporate volunteering features prominently in all aspects of the Bank’s social responsibility efforts.
Since 2004, Deutsche Bank has been enabling talent through infrastructural support to nine schools by refurbishing 25 classrooms to provide better learning facilities for the students. In addition, scholarships were provided to 300 elementary, high school and college students from impoverished families who have demonstrated a strong desire to complete their academic education.
The bank has also spearheaded environmental projects in the last few years to rehabilitate, reforest, preserve and protect the La Mesa Watershed in Quezon City which is the primary source of drinking water for millions of Metro Manila residents. More than 1,000 Deutsche Bank staff were mobilized to plant over 14,000 trees in the 56 hectares of forest land adopted by Deutsche Bank at the Watershed.
As a form of social investment, Deutsche Bank is currently funding a Mobile Health Clinic in partnership with Childhope Asia Philippines, an NGO that aims to provide street children access to basic healthcare. One of its most unique programmes is “Rock Ed”. Short for “Rock Education”, this is an alternative curriculum initiated and executed entirely by Deutsche Bank staff volunteers since 2009, providing street children the opportunity to appreciate and learn about music. Every Saturday, staff volunteers meet 30 street children at the Deutsche Knowledge Services’ headquarters in Taguig City for a four-hour music session, where the children are coached and mentored on vocal training, dance choreography and various musical instruments.
The class of 2010 ended the year with a series of performances, capping off with a Rock-Ed Live event, which raised close to 7,500 Euros for charity. The event was attended by 300 guests and featured performances by the 30 children in the programme. 2011 has been an eventful year, and to date, Deutsche Bank Philippines continues to expand the programme with increased participation of an additional 30 children. Lessons on English language and communication skills will be added to the programme – with the recording of the first Rock-Ed album in the works.
