The programme aims to promote good reading practices at village schools in impoverished regions of China by improving the students’ access to textbooks and extracurricular reading materials. Part of the programme will also involve sending volunteers to the village schools to conduct “Happy Reading Weeks” to help students discover the joy of reading and develop essential self-study skills which will benefit them immensely in the long run.
The first of such activity took place during the past National Golden Week Holidays (1 to 7 October) in Luogou Elementary School in Song County, Henan Province – where 10 volunteers from Rinmin University of China engaged 110 students and teachers in reading and other educational activities.
With support from the Bank in the next three years, more than 260 volunteers will be contributing around 48,000 hours to this programme in 10 selected village schools. The number of village students, teachers and parents benefiting from the program is estimated to be over 3,000.
