Geopark Coastal Clean Up

November 2012 │ Hong Kong

On a beautiful Sunday in November, a team of volunteers from Deutsche Bank participated in a geopark coastal clean-up, a joint event with AFS Intercultural Exchanges and co-organised by Tai Po Environmental Association .

AFS is an international and non-profit organisation that provides intercultural learning opportunities for young students. Today almost 11,000 secondary school-aged students and teachers participate in AFS programs in 52 countries annually including Hong Kong.

On the event day, volunteers from both Deutsche Bank and AFS all came dressed up in their respective volunteer t-shirts but with the same goal of doing something for our environment. After a short 30-minute hike along the country trail, the team arrived at the Geopark which is located in Ma Shi Chau Special Area in Tai Po. It is one of the oldest islands in Hong Kong and is listed as geologically unique because of its natural rocky beach with fossils unearthed centuries ago.

During the event, it was interesting to learn that two of our staff volunteers were also exchange students of the AFS from Hong Kong to Australia and Switzerland decades ago. Furthermore, there were other unexpected happy reunions of high school classmates and exchange students from other countries amongst the volunteers.

Apart from cleaning up the coastal area, all volunteers were given a guided tour by the Association, introducing the unique formation of the fossil rock. The event was successfully concluded with a group photo taken which displayed a spirit of co-operation, just like our tagline -- Passion to Perform!

Everyone had a wonderful time participating in this meaningful event. If you would like to host an exchange student or participate in other AFS programs, please visit
