June 2011 │ India

On 20 June, Annie Yeo, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia, visited Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, India to attend the ‘School Grant Ceremony to Vulnerable Children’ sponsored by the Bank, where 1,300 school bags with school supplies were distributed to children affected by HIV/AIDS.

This programme was implemented by the city-based Vasavya Mahila Mandali (VMM), a non-profit organization which the Bank has been partnering with since 2005. VMM provides education, opportunities, shelter and medical care for underprivileged children.

Also present at the ceremony was Income Tax Commissioner of Vijayawada, Ajay Kumar. Growing up under tough circumstances with a thatched roof and no electricity, Mr. Kumar has overcome tremendous odds and is now an inspiration to the children. In his address, he reminded the children to make best use of the resources that have been given to them and to “study hard and come up in life”.

Ms Yeo also presented a specially framed photo of the President of VMM, Mrs Chennupati Vidya in appreciation of gracing the cover of Deutsche Bank’s Global CSR 2010 report. Mrs Vidya firmly believes in the importance of molding children into responsible adults and has dedicated more than four decades of her life to this cause.
