The school – Yayasan Gracia Abadi Indonesia (Sekolah Gracia) – is located in a district in the outskirts of Jakarta where most of the residents live in poverty, and hosts around 230 children of kindergarten and primary school age.
The school structure is in poor condition, especially the roof which was built using asbestos, posing a serious health hazard to the children. The renovation project, which mainly involves roof replacement and ventilation, started in February 2014, funded by Deutsche Bank Indonesia. Renovation activities were completed at the end of March.
Volunteers from Deutsche Bank Jakarta visited the school again on April 26, 2014 to paint the school. The volunteers received a very warm welcome from the students who had prepared a performance to thank Deutsche Bank for improving the safety of their learning environment. The volunteers were given a tour around the school facilities and were very touched by the happiness of the children studying in the simple facility.
The volunteers went on to paint the walls of the renovated building. Satisfied faces were apparent after the hard work, lunch and mingling together with the staff from the school.
