Singapore and Jakarta staff volunteers aid earthquake-damaged village school in Indonesia

February 2011 │ Indonesia

On 24 January 2011, a team of 22 volunteers from Singapore and Jakarta offices travelled to a remote village - Taboh Marrungai in Pariaman, Padang - to participate in an inauguration of a primary school which was rebuilt with the support of Deutsche Bank following the September 2009 earthquake in Padang, Indonesia.

The volunteers guided the children in a mural painting competition on their new classroom walls. The volunteers also entertained the children with various educational games and sports.

About 6,200 US dollars of voluntary donations were collected prior to the trip, and this amount was spent on gifts for the school, such as computers, educational materials and sports equipment. Bags containing necessities such as sugar and tea were also distributed to families of the school children. These bags were delivered to the homes of these families by the volunteers, who endured the sweltering heat to reach the homes, some of which were far from the proper paths and roads.

In the official handover ceremony graced by the Bupati or district chief, the children performed various songs and dances. Deutsche Bank staff also took to the stage to perform an original song specially composed for the occasion to celebrate the rebuilding of the school and of the resilient human spirit exhibited by the villagers and the children.
