Joss Stone visits Deutsche's Rock-ed programme in Philippines

Celebrity soul singer, songwriter and actress Jocelyn Eve Stoker, or Joss Stone as she is popularly known, visited DKS Rock-ed, a community programme sponsored by Deutsche Bank and run by staff from Deutsche Knowledge Services (DKS) Philippines. Rock-ed (short for Rock education) provides street children in and around Manila the opportunity to appreciate and learn about music.

Initiated by DKS Philippines in 2009, Rock-ed is based on the belief that music plays a key role in empowering children while they discover their musical talent.  Every week, close to 20 Deutsche staff volunteers spend their Saturday introducing Manila’s street children to the wonders of music, with lessons spanning guitar, bass, piano, drums, dance and vocals.

“Besides giving the kids the opportunity to learn music, the programme is also about giving them confidence and self-belief that a better life is attainable," said Erickson Borabo, Trading Risk & P&L Book Runner for DKS in Manila. "As of today, we are pleased to report that all the kids in the Programme are attending school regularly and, from our original 2009 group, some are in full-time work and even pursuing a college education, which they put firmly down to the influence of Rock-ed.”

DKS Rock-ed, now into its fourth year, received a visit from the Grammy award-winning singer on March 5, as part of her three- city Asian tour. Stone and her team were filming a pilot for a documentary she intends to produce in 2014. Stone, who has sold 13 million albums worldwide over a ten-year career, spent half a day with the Rock-ed kids and volunteers, starting with a meet and greet in Paco, Manila and followed up by a visit to the DKS office in Fort Bonifacio. Stone and her band were treated to a performance by the dance crew and a three-song set by Rock-ed band ‘Ikru’, whose members had not picked up a musical instrument until four years ago. She then held a one-hour vocal lesson and even performed an impromptu song for the audience.

Our goal is to make music and cultural experiences accessible to as many people as possible in order to promote a creative and innovative generation. Four years into this programme, we have seen how these children have gained self esteem and confidence, and have gone on to perform at charitable events to raise funds to help other disadvantaged children. Stone will travel to 200 countries over the next two years as part of her world concert tour and learn about different music cultures.
