Feeding the homeless in the City Centre

June 2012 │ Malaysia

Soup kitchens exist in many of the world’s capital cities, and for the homeless and destitute it is a sanctuary for a warm meal and human interaction. In Kuala Lumpur, for the destitute families and especially elderly folks who cannot afford a warm meal, soup kitchens are their lifeline for survival in the capital city.

On June 1, 2012, 43 Deutsche Bank staff volunteers, with their family members, assisted the PERTIWI Soup Kitchen by distributing and cooking meals for the homeless in the city of Kuala Lumpur.  The PERTIWI Soup Kitchen is one of the few NGOs involved in humanitarian food-aid service for the poor, irrespective of race and religion, by food distribution in the city centre.

The staff volunteers split themselves into two groups:  one group was involved in the preparation of hotdogs for distribution and the other group in the logistics of the actual distribution of food and goodies bags which contained biscuits, drinks and snacks.  Deutsche Bank Kuala Lumpur also sponsored 350 packets of Asian staple food (steamed rice with meat and vegetables) for distribution with the help of PERTIWI Soup Kitchen volunteers.  Prior preparation for the event involved collection of pre-owned clothes for distribution onsite.

The pre-packed staple food, hot-dogs, goodies bags and clothing were distributed by our staff volunteers and PERTIWI volunteers in two locations, each within a 5km radius from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur.   Some of the volunteers entertained the group with songs throughout the food distribution and a volunteer doctor was available for those in need of medical consultation.   Besides food distribution, the volunteers took the opportunity to interact with those living in destitute in the CBD and listened to their life stories.

The volunteers were grateful for the opportunity given to contribute their time and effort for this CSR project as they went home feeling very thankful and blessed indeed.

“Deutsche Bank staff and our regular volunteers had a good night out feeding the homeless and poor.  Thank you Deutsche Bank for sponsoring tonight’s food.  It made me so happy to see the wonderful spirit of all corporate volunteers.  May you all continue to be kind, caring & compassionate always.” – Founder of PERTIWI Soup Kitchen

Quotes from Corporate Volunteers:
“As a volunteer, I can see the enthusiasm of everyone working together as a team in reaching the goal to "get the food ready" and we managed to get it done really  fast.  And I'm proud to be one of the Corporate Volunteers, though my contribution was minor as I was only cutting the bread.  Many thanks to the organizing committees for arranging this meaningful event and giving staff the opportunity to give back to people in need.”

“It was an eye-opener to be able to experience feeding these city homeless/hardcore poor and mingle with them onsite - you will know 1001 stories about their lives. It was an unforgettable experience and we should do this more often!”
