Four AkarakA scholars graduate from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Philippines

February 2014 │ Philippines

Another batch of AkarakA scholars received their diplomas at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde commencement exercise on February 22, 2014. Among the graduates at the Philippine International Convention Centre were four AkarakA scholars: Kristen Joy Atregenio, Dominic Medado III, Mariefe Picid, and Jhoanna Kate Sanchez. They celebrated their accomplishment with pride and satisfaction, having succeededdespite facing numerous challenges. In Dominic’s case, he had to put his education on hold for a year due to his family’s finances. Proud families watched the graduates marched onstage, with Mariefe Picid marking the moment with a fist pump.

Attending the commencement were Robert Vogtle, Chief Financial Officer - Asia Pacific, Deutsche Bank, and Ruby Chan of AkarakA, as well as De La Salle coordinators and two of the graduates’ mentors from Deutsche Bank and Deutsche Knowledge Services, Edgar Ampil and Jake Manzanares. Deutsche Bank and staff volunteers have supported AkarakA consistently, making graduations like these possible. The Bank’s financial support and volunteers’ contributions have changed the lives of these young adults and their families for the better.

A celebratory dim sum lunch followed the commencement.

New challenges lie ahead for the graduates, but opportunities that may not otherwise have been available are now possibilities. In Kristen Atregenio’s case, a job at Citibank’s Philippine service centre is lined up.

Guidance and mentorship will continue as AkarakA aims to help the graduates navigate their way to the next phase of their journey.
