DKS Rock-Ed's band, Abstract, records debut album in May

May 2014 │ Philippines

Flashback to May 2009 and the first day of DKS Rock-ed: 30 young street children arrived in the office, unsure of what this new programme was all about. Part of the pioneer group were five boys named Genesis (13), Ricky Boy (11), Louie (14), Raymar (15) and Christian (14). Prior to that day, none of them had picked up or played an instrument, and learning music was something that was only part of their dreams.

Fast forward to five years later… and these five boys now have their own rock band, Abstract. The band has played in several events all over the metro area and has set up a fan page on Facebook with over 200 followers. This May marks the next milestone in the band’s career as they hit the studio to record their debut album.

“It’s truly an amazing achievement,” said one of the band’s mentors and regular Rock-ed teacher. “When you consider these children live on the streets and have so many problems to deal with, that’s the power of music and it should never be underestimated how life-changing it can be. I can’t wait to get into the studio with them!”

When asked about their other wish, the band hopes that this album will help them support their families through its proceeds -- and of course, lead to more gig opportunities.

Details on how to purchase a copy will be announced once available.

DKS Rock-ed, Asia Pacific Winner of the Deutsche Bank Volunteer Awards 2013, is a programme started in 2009 which teaches music and dance to street children in Metro Manila. It has been recognised for creating a significant turnaround in the lives of over 200 kids.
