Volunteering with SPCA

July 2012 │ Singapore

35 Deutsche staff volunteers, along with family members and friends, made their way to SPCA’s (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) premise at 31 Mount Vernon Road on July 14 to engage in a morning of “home improvement” activities. Despite the wet weather which threatened to disrupt the day’s activities, the volunteers were undeterred and soldiered on in going about their allocated tasks.

In the space of four hours, they managed to:
1. Stick labels onto 900 donation tin cans for SPCA's Flag Day to be organised the week after. This was half of all the tins going out to the public for fundraising activities.
2. Clear 20 trash bags of weeds from the premise fence which was unsightly and obscured views
3. Paint one shipping container being used as storage
4. Paint part of the shelter's facade, approximately 12-15 metres by 3 metres
5. Paint murals on the shelter's rear wall, approximately 12 metres by 1.7 metres

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a registered animal welfare charity with IPC status. Not linked to any government agency, the SPCA relies on donations from supporters to continue its important role in animal welfare causes.

Over SGD 2,000,000 annually is required to carry out our animal welfare work. The SPCA receives approximately 600 pets and stray animals every month. This figure includes approximately 90 lost dogs which are all checked for microchips and advertised in the press in an effort to locate their owners.

The two main objectives of the SPCA are to promote kindness to animals and birds and to prevent cruelty to animals and birds. The SPCA also provides various animal welfare services to the community including:
1. A 24-hour emergency service for sick, injured and very young animals
2. Investigation of cruelty complaints
3. Public education programme for students and adults
4. Sterilisation voucher programme for strays
5. A clinic for basic treatment of stray animals
6. Adoption programme
7. A service for lost and found pets
8. Advocacy for the humane treatment of animals
9. Running an animal shelter and supporting quarantine for unwanted, abused and abandoned animals
