SCO ushered in the Lunar New Year with their first of four performances this year on February 6. Mr. Ronny Tan, Chief Country Officer of Deutsche Bank Singapore, gave a welcoming speech to kick off the concert, wishing the orchestra and the audience a Happy Lunar New Year. Titled “Dancing with the Golden Snake” to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Snake, the performance consisted of spring-themed pieces as well as traditional Chinese songs.
We invited some elderly folk from Care St Luke’s ElderCare, a charity supported by the Bank, to enjoy the concert with us. The session was highly interactive as SCO’s resident conductor, Mr Quek Ling Kiong, engaged the audience enthusiastically, inviting the children and the elderly to clap and sing along to the familiar tunes.
A lunch reception was also hosted by the Bank for the elderly and the musicians. As per Chinese traditions, mandarin oranges, symbols of abundance and good fortune, were given out to the guests.
The remaining three SCO lunchtime concerts will be held on June 26, August 21, and November 26.
The Singapore Chinese Orchestra is Singapore's only professional Chinese orchestra and has performed at prestigious concerts in Europe and Asia. Besides its role of preserving traditional Chinese arts and culture, it has successfully incorporated exotic Southeast Asian cultural forms as part of its repertoire. Under the patronage of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the SCO has established itself as an outstanding and unique orchestra.
