Under the programme, tuition classes are conducted by qualified teachers during weekends customised specially for the children in the orphanage to help them in their daily school homework and empower them with knowledge and techniques to prepare for their final exams. The long-term objective aim is to cultivate the importance of good education and spur them to excel in their school work and stay in school. The teachers also act as counsellors or a friend for the children to talk to and share their experiences and grievances.
A total of 15 Deutsche Bank corporate volunteers and their family members visited the orphanage, Persatuan Penyayang Nur Iman in Setapak, Selangor and started by cleaning the home and its surrounding grounds. Activities undertaken included interactive games with the children, who were paired according to their ages with the respective volunteer group leaders. The volunteers also engaged with the children by performing a survey via questionnaire to gauge their education needs and to assist the tuition class teachers in the program. The orphans in turn treated the volunteers to a mini concert performance which was choreographed by the group leaders for the children.
Deutsche Bank also donated groceries such as rice, rice vermicelli, cooking oil, Milo and condensed milk to the home as well as sponsoring school uniforms for the school-going children for next year.
To quote G. K. Chesterton: “Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” The corporate volunteers left the orphanage with an elated sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that theywere able to improve the lives of the orphans through sound education.
