In order to inform target beneficiaries to attend the camp, publicity work by NMT began a week before the camp date with the distribution of pamphlets and neighborhood announcements. 15 Deutsche employees volunteered to assist in the smooth running of the camp, serving as ushers, manning registration desks and helping elderly folk move around. The cataract screening camp saw 230 elders – the highest number in Sandhya Kirana in recent years.
A total of 34 elders were diagnosed with cataracts and advised to go for surgery. They were also counselled about the surgery procedure and reassured of the high chances of success. In the end, a total of 24 elders were successfully persuaded to undergo cataract surgery. In addition, 158 pairs of spectacles, sponsored by Deutsche Bank, with bi-power and bi-focal lenses to correct long- and short-sightedness, were also prescribed for needy elders.
The Deutsche volunteers had a meaningful and enjoyable time. One volunteer commented, “I would like to thank our corporate social responsibility team for giving us this wonderful chance to participate.” Another volunteer remarked, “The activity was truly a very good one and I feel very blessed to have been a part of this initiative – it was great. I look forward to participating in more of such activities.”
