I leave for home by the office bus, treating myself to some good music and reading the newspaper while the bus negotiates the peak hour traffic. When I get home, I spend time with family, watch TV or write.
The solitude of the written word provides a welcome contrast to the busy office environment. For instance, today, amongst other activities, I moved a new barcode solution to the next phase; sent responses from a brainstorming session on process improvement to the internal risk team to get their views; shared a volume data analysis of various countries; and prepared a monthly performance report for senior management.
But in between all of this I have been able to pursue my interest in writing at work. I’m part of the team that produces a quarterly newsletter for our division, which has a global audience. It is these ‘more than just work’ initiatives that add an extra dimension to my daily work and help create an inclusive working environment where professional performance and personal growth and fulfillment share equal status.
