2014 Easter Festival in Baden-Baden: joint productions of the Academy Opera Today with the Berliner Philharmoniker

For the second time, scholars of the Academy Opera Today (AMH) have already produced two productions for the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden together with the Berliner Philharmoniker – “The Small Manon” and the two-part performance “Scandal in Baden-Baden!”

Osterfestpiele 2014 Baden-Baden

As part of a long-term cooperation between the Deutsche Bank Foundation and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, scholars and alumni of Academy Opera Today have participated in the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden since 2013. They are responsible for producing a children’s opera at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and a chamber opera at Theater Baden-Baden, in collaboration with experienced musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker. The production team is selected by an expert jury as part of a tender process.

“The Small Manon” at the Festspielhaus and “Scandal in Baden-Baden!” at Theater Baden-Baden

A version of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” will be performed for children this year at the Festspielhaus. For children five years and older, the academy scholars have rewritten Puccini’s successful opera about a women who has everything but loses it all because she cannot hold on to anything. The young viewers are actively engaged in the performance and become part of a fantastic story.

In Theater Baden-Baden, the AMH team “Scandal in Baden-Baden!” presents a double performance consisting of two chamber operas by Bertolt Brecht together with Kurt Weill and Paul Hindemith. “Mahagonny-Songspiel” (also known as “The Little Mahagonny”) from Brecht and Weill and “Lehrstück” from Hindemith were both performed at the end of the 1920s and drew strong reactions from viewers, particularly because of a bloody scene, which shocked them.

Academy Opera Today

Since its founding in 2001, Academy Opera Today has become firmly established in the field of opera promotion, filling a gap in supporting young talent in the world of opera. Many academy alumni now hold executive positions in international operas. As a networking organization, the academy brings together future opera managers who have an opportunity to share views on innovative developments shaping the opera world during the two-year support program and to invigorate the current opera scene through their practical collaboration.
