Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change anticipates negative impact on global water supply. Numerous companies are working on solutions.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fears that climate change will have a substantial impact on the supply of water. Numerous companies are working on solutions. Investors can participate in those future-oriented companies through a share-based investment fund like DWS Water Sustainability.
Working Group II of the IPCC regards its report on the consequences of climate change as a decision-making aid for the political and business sectors. The experts fear that climate change will have a substantial impact on the supply of water. The IPCC researchers write that global warming has only had a minimal impact up to now. However, in the future they anticipate perceptible consequences, above all in developing countries.
Comprehensive supply of clean water a decisive factor
The most effective counter-measures against this anticipated development are reportedly a comprehensive supply of clean water and sanitary facilities, health programmes and poverty reduction.
In the estimation of the scientists, the southern part of Europe will probably suffer more from climate change in future. Heat waves and water scarcity will reportedly be possible – with the corresponding consequences for agriculture, industry, tourism and people’s health. However, scientists currently assess those risks for Europe as “low to moderate” because the ability to adapt is relatively high in the region. In fact, numerous companies are already working on techniques and methods that will enable farmers, companies and municipalities to counteract the dreaded scarcity of water.
Taking on responsibility: focus on future-oriented companies
There is already a demand for their products now. Among other things, the good performance of the shares of stock corporations working in that segment is confirmation of that. Investors can participate in those future oriented companies through a share-based investment fund like DWS Water Sustainability and thus take on responsibility.
That investment fund invests mainly in shares of German and foreign companies that are active along the entire value added chain within the water sector: water supply, water infrastructure, water technology and water resource management.
