Local and International Organizations jointly preserve the Mangrove Marine Environment in Ghantoot Reserve

On Friday 1st February 2013, approximately 400 volunteers from different organizations in Dubai will be joining forces to help the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) preserving the Mangrove Marine Environment in Ghantoot Reserve at Jebel Ali. This reserve is one of the largest protected breeding and feeding grounds for hawksbill turtles in the United Arab Emirates.

The event is themed as “One Day to Make a Difference” and it is a part of the national celebration of the UAE Environmental Day taking place on the 4th of February 2013.

The mangrove tree is a halophyte, a plant that thrives in salty conditions, thereby making significant contributions that benefit the environment. Their coverage of coastal shorelines and wetlands provides many diverse species of birds, mammals, and fish a unique, irreplaceable habitat. Mangroves preserve water quality and reduce pollution by filtering suspended material and assimilating dissolved nutrients.

The volunteers will be cleaning the mangroves’ roots from green Algae and will be planting new mangroves in the reserve as well. The collected Algae will be re-used to clear oil spill as it can be used when dried and well-stored to clear oil spills from the Sea.

The volunteers will be cleaning the wild beach next to the reserve from plastic debris and general waste as well.

The initiative is supported by over 400 employees and their families, from a number of local and international companies, including Dubai International Financial Center Authority, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, Johnson Controls and Transguard Group LLC. The event is organized for them by the UAE based sustainability group Goumbook.

Mr. Ali Saqar Sultan Alsuwidi, President of the Mangrove Emirates Marine Environment Reserve Group in Ghantoot, also known as Major Ali,: “It is always inspiring to see the community come together and dedicate time and resources to help and make our local environment cleaner, healthier, and even more beautiful than it already is. We would like to thank all the participating companies for their help and support for this important initiative. We hope that their example will be encouraging others to follow."
