Deutsche Bank today announced the appointment of James McMurdo as Chief Executive Officer of Australia and New Zealand, effective February 2014, replacing John (JT) Macfarlane, who is retiring in early 2014 after 25 years at Deutsche Bank.
McMurdo has most recently been a partner at Goldman Sachs based in London and Head of its Financial Sponsors Group for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Previously he was Co-Head of Investment Banking for Goldman Sachs in Australia and New Zealand. He will report to Gunit Chadha and Alan Cloete, Co-Chief Executive Officers for Asia Pacific and Members of Deutsche Bank’s Group Executive Committee.
Announcing the appointment, Gunit Chadha said: “James McMurdo is one of the most respected bankers in this key growth market for Deutsche Bank. He brings great depth of experience to this important role and is best suited to help grow our strong position across all our client businesses.
"Together with JT Macfarlane and Michael Ormaechea, Head of Corporate Banking & Securities in Australia and New Zealand and Head of FICC and Equities APAC, we have three highly experienced and well-respected leaders to ensure a smooth transition in the months to come."
Deutsche Bank has a long-standing position as one of the leading investment banks in Australia and New Zealand. Together with a dominant No. 1 ranked Debt Sales and Trading franchise and a leading top 3 Equities franchise, Deutsche Bank has recently completed some of the region's most high profile public markets transactions. The local business is complemented by a growing Private Wealth Management business, proven Asset Management capability and an emerging Global Transaction Banking business.
JT Macfarlane announced in June that he would be stepping down after 25 years at Deutsche Bank. He has been Executive Chairman of Australia and New Zealand since 2007 and Chief Country Officer for Australia since 2011. His 32-year career in finance and banking began at the New Zealand Treasury in 1981. He joined Bankers Trust in 1988, becoming Chief Executive Officer for the New Zealand business. He became President and Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank in Japan following the acquisition of BT in 1999.
