The Frieze Art Fair in London: Deutsche Bank continues to support young art


This year, Deutsche Bank is for the fourth time main sponsor of the Frieze Art Fair, which takes place in London from October 11 – 14, 2007. In addition to its sponsorship, the bank is also supporting a performance project of the Frankfurter Kunstverein titled “A Delicious Feeling of Confidence.” In addition, the Education Space, also supported by the bank, offers an education program conceived together with the Camden Arts Center. The fair also provides the bank with an opportunity to purchase new works to further build upon its collection. And finally, the exhibition “New Horizons” in the Deutsche Bank Lounge presents artistic interpretations on this theme from the company’s collection. 

The success of the Frieze Art Fair is largely due to the tremendous response this highly public-oriented fair enjoys each year in the British capital. The Frieze Art Fair has developed since its beginnings in 2002 from an ambitious newcomer project into one of the most important art events worldwide. Each year, the number of visitors increases by an additional 35%. Last year over 63,000 people visited the more than 150 international galleries in Regents Park. During so-called “Frieze Week,” London is transformed into a Mecca for art fans from around the world who can experience young art all around the city: at several parallel fairs, in museums, institutions, galleries, or in the public arena.

We’re also supporting a project at Frieze Art Fair for the first time this year:  for “A Delicious Feeling of Confidence,” the Frankfurter Kunstverein has commissioned the Slovenian newcomer Tobias Putrih to design a special stage for the fair, where performances, films, and artists’ actions by international participants will take place each day that invoke the rebellious spirit of stand-up comedy and implement humor as a subversive political strategy. Additional participants in the project are the artists Dora García, Maria Pask, Claus Richter, and the artists’ group Ride.1.

After its huge success at the last Frieze Art Fair, the Education Space 2007 sponsored by Deutsche Bank presents a program conceived in collaboration with the Camden Arts Center called “Introducing to the Art World,” in which young people, school classes, and families can take part in artists’ workshops, podium discussions, and guided fair tours.

During the fair, information on the bank’s commitment can be obtained in front of and inside the Deutsche Bank Lounge. An integral part of this commitment is the online magazine www.db-artmag.com, which provides insight into the bank’s cultural activities with artist and curator interviews, reports, and essays. As it did last year, db artmag appears as a print edition in tandem with the Frieze Art Fair to report on Deutsche Bank’s art program right on site. This year’s focus is the promotion of young artists.

The exhibition from the Deutsche Bank Collection presented in the lounge, “New Hori-zons,” addresses the artistic representation of the theme “Horizon”: presented are works by art stars such as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Gerhard Richter, but also works by newcomers like Fiona Tan and Federico Guzman, purchased last year at Frieze 2006.
