Bob Dylan pictures in Chemnitz: Deutsche Bank Foundation supports the world premiere

Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is to host the world’s first-ever museum showing of Bob Dylan’s artistic œuvre. Supported by the Deutsche Bank Foundation, watercolours and gouache paintings from the Drawn Blank series will be on show from October 28, 2007, until February 3, 2008.

Exclusively for this exhibition, Bob Dylan produced around 170 variations of motifs from a book of drawings and sketches done between 1989 and 1992, which were published in 1994 under the title “Drawn Blank”. In the book’s preface, the artist explained that these works were sketches for paintings that he eventually planned to complete. The now fully realized works are photo-lithographs of his own pictoral motifs transferred to handmade paper, which Bob Dylan reworked in watercolour and gouache to create surprising new variations and modes of expression.

It was during a trip to New York that Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz Director Ingrid Mössinger came across Dylan’s art works. Her subsequent inquiry about an exhibition motivated the artist to produce new works. “I was fascinated to learn of Ingrid’s interest in my work, and it gave me the impetus to realize the vision I had for these drawings many years ago,” says Bob Dylan. “If not for this interest, I don’t know if I even would have revisited them”. The variations of the sketches of his travels have titles, lending the scenes a greater reality and immediacy. His memories have thus been formed into portraits, landscapes, still lives, streets, buildings, etc.

The exhibition marks the continuation of the cooperation between Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and Deutsche Bank. Back in 1998, the large-scale retrospective “Georg Baselitz. Deutsche Bank Collection” was on view at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. In 2002, the Deutsche Bank Foundation supported the innovative exhibition “Picasso et le femmes”. Through its commitment to the Bob Dylan showing, the Foundation is combining its two focal points of support: “Art and Music”.
