Imi Knoebel in Den Haag: Gemeentemuseum shows works from the Deutsche Bank collection

The Deutsche Bank Collection is closely tied to Imi Knoebel. For more than 25 years, the bank has continuously acquired works by the Beuys student. Now the Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag is devoting a comprehensive exhibition to the artist (who was born in Dessau in 1940). Forming the basis of Imi Knoebel – Fishing. Deutsche Bank Collection and New Works are some 100 paintings, drawings, collages, and photo works from the Deutsche Bank Collection. They are supplemented by current works that the artist provided for the exhibition.

Imi Knoebel has consistently exploited the possibilities of nonfigurative art more than any other contemporary German artist. The development of his abstract work has been long discussed in connection with Kazimir Malevich. The current exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag views the work of the artist from a new perspective – Knoebel’s engagement with Piet Mondrian’s artistic vocabulary. The Gemeentemuseum has the world’s leading collection of works by the Dutch Painter, whose dynamic compositions in the primary colors red, blue and yellow had a strong impact on Knoebel. The exhibition documents all the creative phases of the Düsseldorf-based artist.

There are now more than 1,000 of Knoebel’s works in the Deutsche Bank Collection. New works were shown under the title ICH NICHT, and subsequently ENDUROS presented a retrospective of works by the artist executed from 1968 to 2005.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a monographic catalogue in Dutch and English is being published. It includes texts by Hubertus Butin, Jörg Heiser, Friedhelm Hütte, Franz Kaiser, David Moos, Petra Richter and Johannes Stüttgen. The price is 39.95 Euros (216 pages; ISBN 978-3-942294-06-5).
