Mandela Day: a global call to take 67 minutes action to change the world for better through volunteering and community service. The official date is July 18 and it is in honour of the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his 67 years of service to humanity. This year, Deutsche Bank Johannesburg employees were encouraged to make a difference through two Plus You initiatives: an off-site house build and an on-site food parcel packing marathon. A team of Deutsche Bank volunteers participated in the Habitat For Humanity SA`s Nelson Mandela International Day Build in Orange Farm, a poor township community on the outskirts of Johannesburg helping to build 67 homes for 67 families on Monday July 17, 2017.
Kefiloe Tsotsotso from Prime Brokerage reflected: “Being at Orange Farm reminded me of how things that we overlook and take for granted, like basic shelter, would be a dream come true for someone else. I salute all the men and women who do this for a living On July 18 at Deutsche Bank’s offices employees packed nutritious meals with Stop Hunger Now. The on-site meal packing allowed for each person to join at a time convenient for them and to slot in the continuous five hour processing line. The packed meals are distributed to underprivileged pre-schools ensuring the children get at least one healthy balanced meal a day.
Ryan Eichstadt, an equities research analyst, had this to say: “Although only a drop in the ocean compared to what we could and should be doing to better our Country and those less fortunate than ourselves, it was rewarding to take a step back from serious work obligations and assist in preparing food parcels for those in need. We all need to do more for others.”
