On June 10, South African Deutsche Bankers, together with the Deutsche Bank South Africa Foundation partner Brainwave Careers, distributed over 1,200 school winter warmer sets to children at Diepsloot’s Basa Primary School as part of its local winter drive. Thanks to the generosity of Deutsche Bank staff pledges, matched by the foundation, Sparrow Schools will also receive the beanie, gloves and scarf sets.
“It was a humbling experience to get to hand out the scarfs, gloves and beanies to kids who truly needed them. The event was well planned and coordinated by the foundation which allowed us to put a lot of smiles on those little faces” said Dinesh Rajah, Head of GTP SA.
Tankiso Thekiso in Market Prime Finance, who currently volunteers to run the annual winter drive, which has been an ongoing tradition for over 15 years, says: “the measure of a person’s life is the effect they have on others. It is not how much you give but the love and effort that you put into it that makes all the difference.”
Through the foundation’s Born to Be education programme partner, Brainwaves provides academic and class support in English and Mathematics to the Foundation phase teachers at Basa Primary School. The main goal of the partnership with Brainwaves is to make sure children in the foundation phases receive a proper education from teachers who’ve had the right training, particularly pre-school teachers. Similarly, the current focus with Sparrows Schools is to ensure children get the best start in life through the delivery of a complete Early Childhood Education training solution, which includes, not only an accredited qualification, also on the job training. Deutsche Bank encourages all employees to volunteer. In South Africa employees can take two days out of the office each year for volunteering. Being involved in the community is central to how Deutsche Bank does business.
