Finding a place for all

Mainstream education doesn’t work for everybody

Young people need to have relevant knowledge and skills to participate in the economy. A mainstream education may not be the answer for every student, especially those who face barriers to learning.

Sparrow Schools Educational Trust is a training and education facility in Johannesburg that supports young people who do not cope in mainstream schools. We’ve supported the work of the Trust since 2001, helping to keep fees affordable or free for students.

The mission of Sparrow Schools is to ensure its students become skilled, resilient and employable young graduates who are equipped to contribute positively to society. Most come from underprivileged backgrounds. In their short lives, they have been impacted by poverty, HIV/AIDS or unemployment in their families. Serious learning difficulties are common.

Through specialised educational, vocational skills training and individual learner support, Sparrow Schools prepares these young people to enter the job market or go on to further education where they can gain vocational qualifications.

The Trust runs a FET college that provides NQF qualifications. We’ve funded the launch and continuation of NQF level 4 teacher training in early childhood development at the college.
