Debate Mate reaches USA

Learning to debate delivers key 21st century skills that the next generation need to succeed – communication (speaking and listening), interpersonal skills, leadership, teamwork and confidence.

Deutsche Bank’s partnership with Debate Mate delivers this impact in over 140 schools in five UK cities annually through the Deutsche Bank Debate Mate Cup, and now Debate Mate is reaching schools in the USA too.

Debate Mate USA, the sister organisation of Debate Mate UK, now supports 20 schools across Boston and Chicago, with aspirations to expand further across the States. Just as in the UK, the programme engages the brightest and best University students to go into areas of high child poverty and teach after school debate clubs. Their support has been shown to significantly improve academic performance of school students, allowing deprived, inner city communities to flourish and become the next generation of political, community and economic leaders.

Anna Smith, USA Programme Director at Debate Mate said, “By the end of 10 weeks of after-school debate clubs students can talk for five minutes each in front of 200 peers, and can successfully prepare for their debates with only 15 minutes notice of the topic. It's amazing to see what these kids can do! Most of them would have never dreamed they would have been able to do this, let alone debating in institutions such as Harvard and the University of Chicago. It's truly inspirational to see the impact that this has on them.”
