As StreetSmart launches its 2014 campaign, help address homelessness by eating out this winter

It’s impossible to fulfil your potential if every day is a fight for survival. That’s a reality for the 80,000 young people aged 16-25 who experience homelessness in the UK each year.* The number of rough sleepers in London alone in 2013 was 6,508 people, a rise of 77% since 2010.** By simply eating out during November and December, you could be doing your bit to help this winter.

The annual restaurant campaign, beginning on November 1 and run by StreetSmart, raises funds to tackle homelessness by adding a voluntary £1 per table to diner’s bills over the two-month period. You can join hundreds of top restaurants, restaurateurs, chefs and patrons, including Richard Bacon and Marcus Wareing, to help enrich the lives of those caught in the misery of homelessness by dining at a participating restaurant.

These include Ottolenghi and Arbutus, with Gymkhana, Rotorino and the newly Michelin starred City Social joining the campaign this year.

Deutsche Bank’s partnership with StreetSmart is aligned to the Bank’s Born to Be youth engagement programme and last year, more thanover 50% of funds were allocated to youth homelessness and preventative projects. These include family mediation projects and projects giving the extra help required to train and employ those young people who have slipped through the system. Having funded all campaign costs since 2006, Deutsche Bank ensures that every single penny donated goes to charity and £4.5 million has been donated in those eight years. In 2013 alone, £610,000 was raised over the two month period.

Its sister campaign, SleepSmart, engages top hotels in a similar way with £1 added to each guest’s stay over the same period. Hotels participating this year include Park Plaza Hotels, Jumeirah Hotels and The Hyatt Regency Churchill.

Wherever you dine or overnight, you will be helping your local community as StreetSmart passes on contributions to charities operating in the area where the restaurant or hotel is located.
