LONDON. Deutsche Bank yesterday held its 7th Annual Women in European Business (WEB) London conference at The Barbican. The event was attended by over 1800 delegates, representing a wide range of businesses.
The theme of this year’s conference, “Finding Your Voice” considered the broadest meaning of the phrase, exploring direct communication, the concept of finding your niche, and leveraging the unique views, insights and approaches women bring to the workplace. It examined how women create and use their own voice, and how they can adapt that voice to different contexts as their career progresses.
Cherie Blair opened the conference with an insight into how she found her voice in her different roles as lawyer, campaigner for women’s rights, mother, and wife of a former Prime Minister. She said, “If we are to overcome the immense challenges our world faces, we need to help all women find their voice so they can play their full role in society. The prize is not just a better world for women, but a better world for everyone.”
Delegates then heard from a panel of speakers: Amanda Berry, CEO, Bafta, Hermann-Josef Lamberti, Member of the Deutsche Bank Management Board, Dorothy Thomson, CEO, Drax, and Helen Weir, Group Executive Director, UK Retail Banking, Lloyds TSB.
The event ended with a speech from author and Huffington Post editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington who provided hints and tips on how to be more fearless at work and thereby achieve your goals. She suggested "that fearlessness is not the absence of fear but the mastery of it. It's getting up one more time than you fall down. It's about not listening to your inner-critic – the obnoxious roommate living in our head – and not letting the fear of failing stop us from pursuing our dreams. Because failure is not the opposite of success; it's a stepping stone to success."
The event was moderated by Newsnight’s main presenter Kirsty Wark.
The Deutsche Bank WEB London Conference seeks to create an environment in which women can share their experiences, develop contacts and identify role models to help further their careers. The event is also a catalyst for building a business community of women in the City.
