Deutsche Bank employees to tackle the opening stages of the 2014 Tour de France

This weekend, 160 Deutsche Bank employees will be cycling the UK stages of the world’s most famous cycle race, the Tour de France* which starts in Yorkshire this year. They will be riding either three stages over 300 miles starting in Yorkshire, or the final 100 miles from Cambridge to London. Employees from many different parts of the Bank from London, Birmingham and further afield will be taking part. The event has also attracted ex-UK employees who now work for the Bank in other regions from New York, Singapore and Sydney.


This event known as DeutscheBike is Deutsche Bank in the UK's largest ever sporting fundraiser. The aim is to raise £300,000 for Deutsche Bank’s 2014 Charities of the Year, The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity and Malaria No More UK. Colin Grassie, Deutsche Bank UK Chief Executive and member of the Group Executive Committee said, “this is an exciting new initiative for the bank; as part of our Born to Be programme, DeutscheBike challenges employees to explore their potential so that young people can realise theirs.”


Speaking at the launch of DeutscheBike in London, Olympic Gold Medalist and former stage winner of the Tour de France, Chris Boardman MBE said, “when I first heard about the DeutscheBike challenge, I was impressed that so many employees are devoting a big chunk of their personal time to train for this epic challenge, even more so because they are not doing it for personal gain, but to raise valuable funds for two amazing charities.” “The Tour de France is a tough challenge for any athlete, let alone an office based person. So when I learnt more about Deutsche Bank’s Born to Be programme, the level of commitment and time the company puts into supporting young people all year round, I was delighted to help support them”, he added.


The idea for DeutscheBike came from Adrian Munday and Sean Comer of Corporate Banking and Securities. As enthusiastic cyclists they were looking for ways to use the sport to raise money for charity and support Born to Be, the bank’s youth engagement programme.


“When we saw that the Grand Départ of the 2014 Tour de France was in the UK this year, we knew that this was a unique opportunity to offer employees a formidable challenge whilst supporting Deutsche’s Charities of the Year. We’re thrilled what began as a conversation in the pub has become DeutscheBike involving so many employees across the Bank.”


*The Tour de France is a registered trade mark owned by Société Du Tour De France.

About Charities of the Year:

Each year the UK Charities of the Year programme works to champion two charities, voted for by employees and sharing the Bank’s Born to Be mission to help young people fulfill their potential. It works with small charities with a maximum annual income of £5 million to provide them with step changing unrestricted funding that enables them to have a greater impact.


Employees raise funds with the elected charities through activities that include sports events, raffles, quizzes, appeals and challenges. Over £1.8 million was raised in 2013. The 2014 Charities of the Year are Malaria No More UK, who provide lifesaving work to help stop the disease that kills a child every minute, and Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, who support the parents and families of life threatened or terminally ill children.
