Deutsche Bank hosts launch of ground-breaking research tool Sportworks, to sports industry leaders

Deutsche Bank UK yesterday hosted the launch of Sportsworks, the findings of a three-year research project. Hailed as a major step forward in proving the impact and effectiveness of sport in addressing social issues, Sportworks provides a vital boost for a sector which has often fallen under the radar of funders.

Welcoming over 200 participants to the event, including sports industry leaders, Colin Grassie, CEO, Deutsche Bank UK and member of the Group Executive Committee, spoke about Deutsche's new corporate citizenship programme, Born to Be, aimed at tackling the critical issue of youth unemployment and the programme’s flagship partnership, Sported. “With the support of our strategic partners such as Sported, we are working together to find solutions to address this overwhelming and immediate issue.  We firmly believe that clear evidence of the social and financial returns are crucial in attracting further investment; Sportworks is an excellent and important tool," Grassie said.

During the launch Terroll 'Boost' Lewis gave a personal insight to life on the streets for young people with no positive outlets and how his future was turned around through sport. Lewis now inspires many young people through personal training session.  Sir Keith Mills, Deputy Chairman of LOCOG and Founder of The Sported Foundation said, "Those of us who work in the sports sector have always instinctively known that sport is a good social worker, it can provide young people with a positive outlet and teach them valuable life skills but, until now, we haven't been able to prove it".

The research, the most comprehensive carried out in the Sport for Development sector, showed that using sport as an intervention to tackle social problems could reduce the risk of a young person being affected by critical social problems by as much as 20 per cent.

A panel of experts, featuring Sir Richard Lambert, Senior Independent Advisor to Deutsche Bank, Tris Lumley, New Philanthropy Capital and Helen Marshal from Ambition gave their differing perspectives that helped the audience understand the value of shared measurement and collaborative learning, the value of demonstrating impact for funders and for attracting more investment into the sector.
