Expanding a library for Lima's underserved

November 2014 │ Lima

On November 8, Deutsche Bank Peru volunteers helped nonprofit partner Fundación Pachacútec sort and catalog books for its new, upgraded community library.

The organization, founded in 2004, provides educational resources and programs for over 1,100 children and adults annually in Pachacútec, an impoverished informal settlement in the Northern Cone of Lima and Callao. The organization has maintained a community library in a small shipping container. With Deutsche Bank's support, they have been able to expand the library to a larger and more functional permanent space.

A professional librarian guided the Deutsche Bank volunteers through a full day of sorting and cataloging the library’s 6,000 volumes. They coded the books and contributed short summaries of their contents.

Pachacútec residents face profound challenges, including a lack of sewage, water, electricity and transportation infrastructure. Academic attainment in the community is very low: 32.5% finish secondary school and only 3% pursue higher education. Fundación Pachacútec introduces youth to the joys of reading and lifelong learning, and equips them for academic and career success. In addition to its education programs and library, the organization offers valuable vocational training, basic medical services and a day care center.

At the event, volunteers like Jorge Galarza, who works in Global Transaction Banking, were struck by the students’ drive. “Students are highly motivated to improve their lives through education,” Galarza said, “and we have the opportunity to contribute.”

Ahmed Vega, from Global Markets Finance, said, “Fundación Pachacútec staff’s professionalism, commitment and teamwork were contagious, and we were pleased to contribute to their work. The experience made us reflect on our attitude about the limitations we face in our lives.”

Deutsche Bank Peru donated 13 decommissioned CPUs to the library for use by students and librarians. A grant from the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation is funding additional computers for the library, as well as furniture and content management technologies.
