Governors Island

May 25, 2011 │ New York

On May 25, 2011, thirty-six Deutsche Bank employees traveled by ferry to Governors Island, to participate in a volunteer project created in partnership with the Governors Island Alliance.

The volunteers painted the new and updated Harbor Map, a 40' by 40' interactive outdoor map used to educate the Island's visitors and allow them to better understand the geography of the harbor area. This was the second consecutive year that Deutsche Bank partnered with the Governors Island Alliance to assist in preparing the Island to open to the public for the summer season.

The Governors Island Alliance is a coalition of organizations and individuals working to celebrate the Island's rich history, create memorable parks and public spaces, and ensure appropriate reuse of the Island and its historic structures. Donna Milrod, Head of Regional Oversight and Strategy, is Chairman of the Board of the Alliance, and has proven to be a tireless advocate of redeveloping the Island to the City's greatest advantage. Governors Island is a former military facility located only 800 yards from the southern tip of Manhattan. In 2003, the federal government sold the Island, which had been previously off-limits to all civilians, to the people of New York for $1, under the stipulation that the Island be used for public benefit.  Programming for the Island's seventh season includes an Island-wide exhibition of the large-scale sculptures of Mark di Suvero, sponsored in part by Deutsche Bank, and a variety of other events that make exciting day trips for people in the New York area.

In addition to their work on the Harbor Map, the Deutsche Bank volunteers were given a tour around the Island and a brief background on the Island's history . After the project was completed, volunteers spent time with students from the Urban Assembly Harbor School, the Island's first permanent tenant, which recently relocated to Governors Island from Bushwick. Volunteers watched the students take water samples off the pier, toured the school's impressive facilities, and learned about the hands-on teaching methods used to provide a rigorous, college-preparatory education built upon New York City’s maritime experience.
